DVBA Christmas Party

Hilton Ballroom for xmas party

For SERVPRO of Palm Springs we love the holidays, it allows us to engage more with our clients on a personal level. A majority of our interactions can be in response to emergency restoration situations, but during the holidays we can actually get together for the more positive reasons.

In this shot we are attending the Desert Valley Builders association annual Christmas party at the Hilton in Palm Springs. The evening’s festivities where capped off by a rousing recital by Dueling pianos, they are as the name implies, Dueling pianos that really get the crowd involved with tons of call and repeat and blasting out the oldies.

We always find that these events can be key to a successful partnership in the coming year, they really increase the personal connection...and they are really fun.

Happy Holidays

Flooded Tennis Court

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Dirt, Clay or... Water Court play?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs not every water damage loss we encounter is inside. Some of the situations we encounter are areas affected by sprinkler systems, outdoor spigots or broken water mains. While these damages do not affect a structure they still have to be dried out quickly. If the water is not removed it can affect he longevity of the affected areas, if concrete is over saturated the water can become bound at a molecular level. When this occurs the area can undergo spalling in the rebar. Spalling is when the rebar starts to rust and then degrades to the point where it can no longer support the surrounding concrete and it starts to crack and is no longer reliable.

In this picture we see a tennis court that has been flooded by a sprinkler valve that has failed. This will takes push brooms and a sump pump with some hosing and a drainage point to resolve.

Roof Leak in Commercial Facility

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

Buckets of Fun

SERVPRO of Palm Springs deals with commercial water damages all the time. While they may be larger than there residential counterparts, they still use the same equipment and approach.

In this picture we see a shot of a hallway in a commercial building where the owner has set out some buckets to catch the water that is coming through the ceiling. While the flooring might not require much attention, the ceiling and roof may require significant structural repair.

In these situations the damage may have occurred over time and will require demolition to remove all the affected material. This project may need some rebuild work and involve several vendors to get the structure back to operating status.

We always enjoy working with other vendors to bring a project to completion.

Aspects of a Kitchen Demolition

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

Propping up countertops

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs are work has many components. We have many things to consider when we arrive on a job site; what type of loss? How affected is the loss site? How long will the project take? These are just some of the questions we have to ask ourselves when we are first starting our work.

In this picture we see a kitchen demolition where the cabinets have been removed and the countertop has been propped up while the new cabinets are waiting to be installed. There are challenges when dealing with marble or stone as it can become very weak in some areas where it has been cut very thin. Any shifting or movement after it has been installed can cause breakage. This something we communicate before we attempt detachment. Typically we try to prop up the counter tops in place with wood and slats, this minimizes the danger of breakage and protects the customer’s home.

Always choose a provider with the knowledge and proven track record to work on your home.

Collectors House

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

Kitchen/Living room combo

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs we called on to deal with some very interesting projects. We have to deal with what we politely term as a collector’s house. These are projects that not only have a lot of physical work that is required but can also pose emotional problems for the client. We try and maintain a sense of caring and understanding, as well as focus and professionalism.

In this picture we see a shot of a person’s kitchen and living area, a large amount of personal items have been accumulated over the years and have affected access as well present additional work for the project. In this case we had a water damage that could not be mitigated until we cleared out all of the items. The hard part is that a technician does not know what is of value and what can be disposed of. Sometimes the owner has attachment to items that have no apparent value to others but still must be sorted and catalogued.

These jobs are not for the novice providers as they present some of the most challenging work that a vendor can undertake.

Candle Fire

12/8/2017 (Permalink)

Candle left unattended

At SERVPRO of Indian Wells we often encounter fire clean-up during the course of our duties. This type of cleaning can be especially difficult as the flame creates a variety of issues. What burned? How hot? And how long? These three factors greatly contribute to whether or not we can restore the material in question.

This picture acts as a cautionary tale to leaving a candle unattended. The candle flame caught the adjacent material on fire and this spread to a limited area. Luckily. This type of damage is easier to clean as it usually pertains to simple wipe down and deodorization of the structure and contents.

If attempting to clean an area affected by fire do not wipe with anything wet as this can drive the surface residue into the material.

Moldy HVAC closet

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Possible mold growth in the HVAC closet

Here at SERVPRO of Palm Springs we are always helping our clients out with mold issues. The clean-up concerns with microbial growth are very real and may present health concern for those with impacted systems. In this picture we see an HVAC unit that has possible mold concerns. Because of the location of the mold, adjacent to a ventilation system, this can pose a major issue to the entire home as mold can be circulated throughout the duct work.

For this situation we first hired an industrial hygienist to determine what we were facing. After they conducted there tests they provided our company with a set protocol to clean the jobsite and reduce the mold concerns.

It’s always important to work with qualified professionals during your restoration project. This ensures that will job we will done right the first time.

Water Damage at the Oral Surgeons office

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Bubbling walls

At SERVPRO of Palm springs we encounter both residential and commercial projects.

The photo that we have provided is of the latter, it is a picture of an oral surgeon’s office that has been affected by a leak behind the walls. This leak usually manifests itself by causing the paint, normally latex based, to separate from the drywall. This creates large patches of bubbles, where the paint actually starts to slough off of the wall.

We were able to locate the source of the leak, stop the water flow and then remove the affected material. This required setting up containment in the exam room and placing drying equipment as well.

Once we had it dried down we then were able to replace any demoed material and get the office space back in to use.

We understand that owners have a business to run and that the sooner they get things back to normal the better.

RV Dry-down

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

RV drying equipment setup

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs we can also assist vehicles that have been affected by a water damage, there is also a possibility that the clients insurance can cover the damage as well. See you agent for details about personal details.

In this photo we see the interior of an RV that was affected by a failure in the supply line. Once we performed an extraction to remove the bulk of the water we then placed drying equipment. Just like a structure that has been affected, the interior of the RV must also be dried in the same manner. The size of the area and the amount of moisture are measured and from that information we can place the right amount of equipment.

So whether it is a home, a business or in this case an RV, we can help with your water damage project.

Kitchen Fire

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Fire in The kitchen

Here at SERVPRO of Palm Springs when we are called out to assist with Fire clean-up, we realize that there is a lot more than just a structure and content that has been affected. There are the items in the home and the people attached to them.

In this picture we see a shot of a kitchen fire after it has been put out. Not only is there a physical clean-up of all the burnt material, there is also the odor issue that remains to be dealt with. The process is very involved and can take some time.

We have the ability and knowledge to help our clients overcome the obstacles presented and get them back to normal. Once they have the situation cleaned up they can start to move forward with their lives.

SERVPRO has a Segway?

10/4/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO's "Segway"

When a water damage affects carpeting, it is important to stabilize the job site and extract as much water as possible.

One of the ways that this is accomplished is to use a weighted extraction unit.

At first glance they can look similar to the popular SEGWAY vehicles that are used for recreation. But on closer inspection they don’t offer the same range.

The weighted extractor, uses the rider’s body weight to assist in the extraction process.

The water travels down the tubes out to the truck mount engine.

Weighted extraction is used when the vendor is attempting to dry the carpet in place. They may also detach the carpet from the tack strip and "float" the carpet by using air movers.

These are both good methods of restoring items rather than replacing.

Go SERVPRO.

Do You have any SERVPRO literature that you can disperse?

10/4/2016 (Permalink)

Just a couple of brochures!

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian wells we offer our clients a a large volume of lieterature on industry topics.

For some people, this can be the first experience with an emergency loss. The clients are emotionally impacted and need answers to get a sense of control.

Because we are able to respond to so many types of service calls, we need the supporting material to leave behind with the client.

Its not uncommon for people to avoid reading the offered material and to want the vendor to " take care of it".

While we are able to help, its important that they know their role in the loss.

The literature provided by SERVPRO is designed to touch on the key points , but not get lost in industry jargon.

When cold air goes hot

10/3/2016 (Permalink)

'Power-heat' mode on new A/C?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we are experts at disaster clean-up.

In this picture we see a shot of an outdoor A/C unit that has experienced a small electrical fire.

While the heat of the fire had little effect on the actual structure, the soot and odor created where very challenging.

When dealing with a fire clean-up, time is of the essence. Fires create a mixture of compounds and the acid/base present can affect other material.

Also, avoid using wet cleaning methods as this can drive some material creating further damage.

Finally, when a fire occurs, the material present will continue to off-gas. The smell can actually be harmful to your health.

Let the fire department put the fire out and let SERVPRO clean it up.

Tenting wooden flooring to speed up drying

10/3/2016 (Permalink)

Camping in the den

When a water damage occurs on hard wood flooring, it is important to extract the water as quickly as possible.

Wood is porous and will absorb water that it comes into contact with.

When this occurs, based on how the wood is cut, it will "bowl" or "cup".

If this warping is caught in time, we can place equipment that will actually cause the wood to shrink back towards it original shape.

In this picture we see a shot of a wood floor that has been tented. The tent decreases the size of the drying chamber and focuses the process on the affected area. Like a hair dryer as opposed to a drip-dry.

The tenting will speed up the drying process, decrease the cost of the claim and make the right move for all involved.

When is my carpet past saving?

10/3/2016 (Permalink)

Is this carpet done?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and Indian Wells we often encounter situations in which a homeowner is questioning disposal of the carpet.

When is my carpet past saving?

Simply put, when the insured item cannot be returned to its original or like condition. The carpet is past saving.

Beyond stains or visual aesthetics, the carpet should cover the floor and grip the tack strips.

In this shot we see a section of carpet that has started to delaminate or separate from the fibers.

This happens because most carpets are made with water soluble glue and when exposed to a water the glue breaks down.

If this occurs, the carpet cannot be attached to the tack strips and cannot be saved.

So, beyond the visual, if we cannot re-attach it...Its time to replace your carpet.

Tear Gas Clean-up

10/3/2016 (Permalink)

Pink paint or Tear Gas?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we can also assist with crime scene clean-up.

In this picture we see a shot of a wall in a residence that has been hit with a tear-gas canister.

Tear gas presents certain challenges when being cleaned. The first of which is to identify which gas has been used.

There are 15 separate compounds that are used as tear-gas.

Some of which can be cleaned with dry approaches, others, require wet cleaning.

Additionally, if you are vacuuming up a tear-gas damage, be mindful of proper ventilation in the structure. No breaks in hoses and that the site is properly ventilated.

Finally, when cleaning contents that have been affected, remember that they too must be cleaned outdoors or on a downdraft table.

How to get rid of odor issues

9/29/2016 (Permalink)

Hydroxyl on the Job

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we are ready at a moment’s notice 24/7/365.

In this picture we see a shot of our hydroxyl machine. This device is used to safely eliminate odor issues through the use of a

" ...multi-nanometer optical device that produces a different nanometer frequency simultaneously. " -QCI LLC

This means that the equipment can be setup in a dwelling that is occupied. Traditionally, single frequency devices produce an excess of ozone on one particular range, when this is inhaled overtime it can have dramatic effects with negative consequences.

Over exposure to ozone can also have an effect on plastics, deteriorating the structure of affecting the finish.

What is a Spider Box?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we can handle any size job.

In this picture we a shot of a power distributor or a spider box. A spider box used on a jobsite when the availible power source infrastructure is inadequate for meeting the scope of the project.

The spider box helps to balance the demand of the load.

If it is not used and a home is not equipped properly a vendor will experience gaps in the service. Since we are not onsite to monitor the job progress during the entire project, it is important to ensure that what is placed onsite performs up to expectations.

The spider box will keep circuts from breaking and machines from turning off. You want things to do what they are supposed to.

Power outage concerns

9/29/2016 (Permalink)

What happens in the 'fridge when the power goes out?

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and Indian Wells we encounter a variety of clean-up situations.

In this picture we see a shot of a refrigerator at a residence where the power had gone out. Once the organic material comes to room temperature mold and decay set in. You can also experience pest infestation.

This home was a rental property and the incident was not reported until a resident in a neighboring unit complained of odor issues.

If you happen upon this scenario, Do NOT OPEN THE FRIDGE!!!  This will break the seal and release a huge amount of off-gassing.

We typically shrink-wrap the unit, lay down protective covering on the floor, and dolly to a disposal vehicle.

Sometimes these units can be saved, but that service is cost-prohibitive.

Slab Leak in the night

We found the leak

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we are here to help with any size disaster.

In this photo we see a shot of a slab leak that has affected the interior of the residence.

The loss was actually discovered in the middle of the night. The homeowner moved to get out of bed and was greeted with sevral inches of warm water.

When a slab leak occurs it usually perks up through the concrete and spreads out into the home. If the volume of water and time are left unchecked you can awake to a similar situation.

Slab removals are also frustrating in that they require a re-flood of the site. The resaon behind thr re-flood is to locate the souce of the loss. The pipes in the slab are pressurized with water and then the air leaks out where the break in the line is...Along with any remaining water in the lines.

Luckily we are onsite and ready to etract as soon as it perks up.

SERVPRO, Like it never even happened.

Fallen trees

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we are here to help with any size disaster.

In this photo we see a shot of a fallen tree that has affected the rear portion of the residence.

Fallen tree removal is requires a certain level of skill. If the tree is not approached properly secondary damage can occur.

Factors at play, Type of tree, age, health, manner in which it has fallen and adjacent affected structures.

During the process you have to pre-manage the outcome and support the process throughout the stages.

By this we mean that you need to break it down into pieces you can handle. Remeber that trees weigh quite a bit and that gravity is at play during the job.

Or You can just call SERVPRO and we can make it "Like it never even happened".

We bake and assemble over 1200(it grows each year) cookies to hand out to business partners and fellow vendors.

The funnest part of the project is delivering the items to all of our contacts. We are spread out through a very large service area, but it feels like a small community; this means that people talk. We hope they share the joy with there staff...I hear some even makes it home to family.

Its important to give and share with all aspets of the Service industry. We cant do it alone, so why should we celebrate alone.

We tend to set-up at several tourneys throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled for the Big Green tent with the Orange house; we always give the coolest stuff.

SERVPRO is always looking for a few good people to help out with on our our mission. We are especially impressed by people who seek out education and training. Like any good employer we believe that that interdependence is the format for an effective Team.

Here we are at a Career fair for some students at the Center for Employment Training. We conducted multiple initial interviews for Production and Administrative positons. We then setup secondary interviews at our facility.

Go out and meet your potetial employees, not all resumes reflect the candidate, Get eyes on them and ask questions. We all shine in different ways.

We have been hiring from CET for several years and find the quality of their candidates to be much better than other hiring streams. This is a testament to the staff which takes a very old-fashioned approach to complete and throrough training.

Break-in Clean-up at a Bank

Security door does it job, Just like SERVPRO!

Recently we were called out to service a client after hours.

A local bank had experienced a Break-in, after gaining entrance through the ceiling, they attempted to enter the Teller's area seeking items to steal.

During the incident a security door was put to the test. Typically these areas are hardened with multiple layers of material designed to repel intrusion.

Luckily the door did its job and beyond the property damage sustained, no additonal issues were encountered. The suspects where unaware that the bank had secured its funds in its vault, as is common practice.

We conducted an inpection, cleaning and then rebuilt the damaged areas to pre-existing conditions.

Commercial Fire Clean-up

We received notice through our corporate channels that the owner of a local Gas Station had there business affacted by an RV fire near the fuel pumps.

Once the vehicle had been cleared from the scene they were left with extensive smoke damage. This required the appropriate protocol and handling to mitigate the issue effectively.

To avoid pro-longed business interruptions, SERVPRO was called out to take care of it.

They used 'dry-cleaning' methods to initially process the affetced material. They used cherry-pickers to reach the over-head areas and power washers to clean all the surfaces. Any liquid captured during the course of service was properly disposed of.

The key to doing it right the first time is to inspect throughout the process and manage the communication, this sets it up for the win.

Among many projects that, SERVPRO was called to assist with a hotel that had one of the auxilliary wings under water. There where over 20 rooms affected and almost (1) feet of standing water.

After the water extraction and removal of affected materials, they were all set to be rebuilt.

Placement of drying equipment and monitoring of this process, We then conducted a heavy-cleaning based on the type of business and the need for certain levels of cleanliness.
